Contrast Ratio

I’m wondering how the contrast ratio factors in to the stats of an LCD monitor. With the Eizo range the higher end screens seem to have the lower contrast ratio with 400:1 on the GC220, and the cheapest of all, the L768, has 1000:1 ?

Can someone explain why this is ?
