Has anyone figured out how these products differ?

They are exactly the same basic hardware. But when the software asks the device what it is they give a different model number and as a result the software shipped with the device has different feature sets based on the devices model number.
Third party software that interfaces with this hardware will have the same feature set with either device since they are in fact the same hardware. So the answer is that the Display 2 and the LT have different software features with the software that is shipped with the device even though it is the same software. You can purchase a “key” to upgrade your LT to a 2 as well.
