Hello there, I’m new here so first excuse me and my English.
I’d like to ask a general question about SCCA…
I read somewhere that “SCCA is a formula developed by David McDowell, a member of the IDEAlliance Print Properties & Colorimetric Committee”
…while somewhere else I read it was made at RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology).
I’d like to know more about its birth…
Maybe the claims are both true?
Does somebody here know more about this?
Yes, I believe that Dave McDowell was the originator of the technique that became SCCA but that’s something I heard from others…
I think he first proposed the method to correct for the differences when measuring colors of a sample over white backing vs over black backing. It turned out to be quite effective for adjusting between two separate substrates, like in SCCA.
I also reference the technique from Annex A in the ISO standard 15339-1 (though there it’s called “Correction of colorimetric data for variation of substrate colour” )
As for the confirmation of the absolute original source of the technique, I don’t have more to offer.
It was developed by Hans Ott from X-Rite.
He proposed it during a 2003 CGATS meeting. That was taken as an inspiration for Dave who moved on with many practical tests and implementation. He published his findings in TAGA 2005 and can be considered the man how made it accessible to the wide audience …
